Spiros Kontos RD, CDN, CFT is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Dietitian Nutritionist. He is also a Certified Fitness Trainer and the founder of KontosNutriton Inc. Spiros has over ten years of experience in the areas of nutrition and fitness. He specializes in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, weight management and physical fitness. Spiros helps people understand how they can eat right and exercise in order to achieve and maintain control of their health.
Spiros received his Bachelors Degree from Queens College in New York City and his degree in Nutrition and Food Science from Hunter College in New York. He has been a practicing dietitian for over eight years. After completing his Dietetic Supervised Internship Practice at Saint Luke’s Roosevelt and Coler Goldwater, Spiros worked as an outpatient dietitian at the Community Clinic for Family Health at North General Hospital. There, he counseled patients with diabetes, hyperlipidemia and weight management issues and provided nutrition care to patients before and after bariatric surgery. Next, Spiros was a full time clinical dietitian at North General Hospital in New York City for several years where he provided nutrition care to patients of all levels of acuity and a wide variety of disease states. Then he took a position with SODEXO and he became the Clinical Nutrition Manager at North General Hospital. Concurrent with his position as Clinical Nutrition Manager, Spiros served as supervisor of Dietetic Practice Internship programs and as preceptor to dietetic interns from local colleges and SODEXO. Throughout his nutrition career, he has always worked as an independent fitness trainer. After the closing of NGH in 2010, Spiros focused on expanding his nutrition and personal training practice, while also consulting as a dietitian for health clubs, such as Club Fitness NY. In 2011 he founded KontosNutriton Inc. a Manhattan-based nutrition counseling and consulting private practice, which provides medical nutrition therapy for diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular disease. KontosNutriton Inc. also provides nutritional counseling for general wellness, weight management, and sports nutrition.
Spiros offers personal training to people interested in improving their overall physical fitness and to those looking to improve their athletic performance. He also works with people with chronic illnesses, osteoporosis, and with older adults. Spiros has over ten years of experience as a fitness trainer. He started his fitness training career at the 92nd street Y in 1999 and later worked at the Vanderbilt YMCA. After a few years of working at the 92nd Street Y and the Vanderbilt YMCA, Spiros started working as an independent fitness trainer. Throughout his nutrition career, he continued to work as a fitness trainer. Spiros earned his personal trainer certifications from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). He is a member of several fitness organizations including the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and IDEA Fitness.
Spiros holds a certificate in Adult Weight Management from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). He is a member of the Academy and a member of various dietetic practice groups such as Sports Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutrition (SCAN) and Nutrition Entrepreneurs (NE). In addition, he is a member of the Greater New York Dietetic Association (GNYDA) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA).
